bettering our communities through service

Arkansas has introduced new requirements for high school graduates to complete community service hours as part of their graduation criteria. Starting with the class of 2027, all high school students in Arkansas must complete a minimum of 75 hours of community service to earn their diploma. This initiative is designed to encourage civic engagement and foster a sense of responsibility and connection to the community among students. Look for regular updates to this page for service options for your high school student!

Key Points of the New Rules:

  1. Requirement:

    • Every student must complete 75 hours of community service during their high school years (grades 9-12).

  2. Approved Activities:

    • Service hours must be completed through approved activities that benefit the community. These can include volunteering at local non-profits, participating in community clean-up events, helping out at schools, or other activities that provide a tangible benefit to the community.

    • Activities must be non-paid and cannot include work that directly benefits the student’s family.

  3. Documentation:

    • Students are required to keep a log of their service hours, detailing the type of service performed, the organization or individual they served, and the dates and hours worked.

    • This log must be signed by a supervisor from the organization where the service was completed and submitted to the school for validation.

  4. Integration with Curriculum:

    • Some schools may integrate community service projects with their curriculum, allowing students to earn service hours through specific class assignments or school-sponsored events.

  5. Flexibility:

    • Schools have some flexibility in how they implement the requirement, allowing them to tailor the program to the needs and interests of their student body.

    • Students with disabilities or special circumstances may be eligible for accommodations or modifications to the service hour requirement.

  6. Importance:

    • The community service requirement is seen as a way to build character, leadership skills, and a lifelong commitment to service.

    • It also provides students with real-world experiences and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
